4 Different types of Gutter Guards Homeowners Can Choose for Their Home . Which Type Should You Choose?

John Ferguson • September 13, 2022

Gutter guards are designed to keep leaves and other debris from clogging gutters and causing water damage to your home. Gutter guards can also help to prevent birds, insects and other animals from nesting in your gutters and causing damage to your home. However, since various gutter guard types are available in the market, which one's the best for your home? Here are some ideas you can try:

1. Brush Gutter Guards

Brush gutter guards are the most common gutter guard available in the market and can be purchased online or at Bunnings. They are made of stiff bristles that are placed inside of the gutters.

Brush gutter guards are effective at keeping leaves out of your gutters. However, they can be challenging to maintain as debris lands on top of the wire mesh and becomes trapped. This then degrades and breaks down inside the mesh, causing debris to accumulate and cause blockages. Once this happens you will need to remove the wire mesh from the gutters to be able to effectively clean the gutters. Because of this, homeowners should be more cautious in choosing them if they prefer less cleaning and want a reliable solution that keeps your gutters permanently leaf and bird free.

Over the years our team of technicians have removed a lot of these gutter guard systems and replaced them with our more effective high quality product.

2. Foam Gutter Guards

Foam gutter guards are made from polyurethane and are designed to fit inside gutters. They are placed on top of the gutters and allow water to flow through while preventing debris from entering the gutters. The porous material makes it easier to drain the moisture, allowing the roof to dry out under the sun.

However, a downside of using foam gutter guards is when water manifests during winter. Since the water trapped in the foam might freeze due to low temperatures, it might become too heavy for the gutter. This can cause the structure to weaken and get damaged. Homeowners should keep an eye out for the gutter guard and change it as needed in between seasons.

3. Vinyl Gutter Guards

Vinyl gutter guards are an American product and one of the market's most popular types of gutter guards in the U.S. They are made from polyvinyl chloride and are placed over the gutters. The material is sturdy and can last for many years. They are also easy to install and are made to fit different types of gutters. However they are not designed to meet harsh Australian conditions and do not meet Australian standards.

4. Gutter Guard King Tas Aluminium Mesh

Our Gutter Mesh is an over-the-gutter, ski-slope design which forms a physical barrier to prevent leaves and debris from entering gutters. The mesh fits from the outside edge of the gutter across the gutter section and then is attached to the roof surface. This creates a platform that suspends leaves and debris above the roof gutter, allowing the majority of material build-up to be blown away by wind action.

It is also designed to keep out birds, pests and vermin, making it an ideal solution for most gutter protection requirements. It suits popular roof types (corrugated, Trimdek and tile) and is available in 27 colours and is bushfire compliant to AS3959-20091. It is designed to blend with the colour scheme of your home and designed to match the COLORBOND® steel colour range.

Our gutter guard mesh conforms to the Australian Standard for the Construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas (AS 3959-2009). We also supply and install 2mm Ember mesh as well as a steel gutter guard system for customers who live in a bushfire zone with a BAL Rating of 40 and above.
