Six Common Gutter Problems to Look Out for in Your Property

John Ferguson • June 20, 2022

Guttering around a roof is one of the most crucial yet underestimated features of a business or residential building. If adequately cared for and maintained, your guttering will offer good rainfall drainage and protect your roof from water intrusion. However, if you ignore the gutters around your roof, they will ultimately cause numerous issues with your home's infrastructure.

Roof leaks, damaged roofing materials, water damage, and even foundation collapse can result from poor gutter installation or upkeep. Gutters have only one purpose for your home: to move water from the roof and drain it away from the building's foundation.

While the notion of guttering is simple, there are a variety of obstacles that might prevent gutters from performing their function correctly. The following are the most typical gutter issues that property owners face:

Leaks

Leaking gutters are some of the most prevalent gutter problems that may develop in any home. When guttering leaks, the results can be disastrous.

After all, gutters are designed to channel and direct water to a specific location; a leak completely undermines the system and can cause damage to a property's external walls, siding, and foundation. Loose fasteners, cracks, and holes are the most typical reasons for leaky gutters.

Clogs

Gutter clogs are the most prevalent issue seen on all types of properties. Gutters will gradually fill up with dirt, leaves, debris, insects, and vermin over time.

Blocked gutters are especially common in buildings with overhanging trees and lush surroundings. If you don't clean your gutters regularly, this build-up will only worsen and produce difficulties for your gutters.

Clogged gutters make it difficult for water to drain, place undue strain on the guttering system, and allow water to penetrate the roof hollow. A great way to prevent this clogging is to get gutter guards installed.

Backflows or Overflows

Rainwater draining from the roof edge travels under the roof or behind the gutters instead of into the gutter troughs, causing gutter backflow. Clogged gutters, inadequately placed flashing around the gutters, and blocked gutters can cause back-flow in gutter troughs. If you notice that your gutters are overflowing or backflows, you should have them inspected immediately to avoid costly water damage.

Separating at the Joint

When gutters get clogged, old, damaged, or just placed incorrectly, they may begin to pull away from the roofing or fascia board and separate. One of the most prevalent gutter problems is gutter joint separation, which occurs when people do not take the time to care for and maintain their guttering system properly. When gutter joints separate, water has a large open area where it can damage walls, siding, gutters, fascia, and roofing materials.

Pooling Water

Downspouts are meant to move water away from the building from gutter troughs and dump it in a designated spot. If downspouts drain water too close to the structure, it can pool and cause damage to the home or business site's foundations.

To prevent drained water from harming the property, downspouts must extend many metres from the home or commercial structure, whether by gutter extensions or additional downspout material.

Inaccurate Sloping

Gutters must be slanted, inclined, and pitched appropriately for water to flow effectively off the roof. Water will pool in parts of the guttering if the pitch is incorrect and will not drain effectively. Rainwater will ultimately pool in the gutters, pour over the sides, and damage the roof due to poor gutter pitch and slope.

Conclusion

If you've ever noticed your guttering leaking or clogged, now is the time to contact an expert. Gutters and downspouts are not something you should leave clogged or unattended. By engaging in a regular gutter cleaning schedule you will avoid costly problems down the track.
